STORY
BEHIND THE CSFLI
Since
every year we have new supporters, we consider very important
to share again the story that gave birth to what is today
the CSFLI.
The
genesis for what is today the CSFLI was the death of our
second child while in the 6th month of pregnancy.
When we lost him to death in 1991, family, colleagues,
friends, including parishioners at Trinity Lutheran in
Edgemont, SD, asked how could be of any help during this
painful time of loss & grief. As a family, we prayed
about it & waited for God to reveal to us what could
come out of this tragedy. After all, we have always known
that our loving God has the power to bring life out of
death & fresh blessings out of tragedy.
And
so it happened! In response to prayer, God gave us the
compelling vision of compassion & service among poor
families in Colombia which is today the Colombian Scholarship
Fund & Leadership Initiatives LIZWAN. Generous memorials
were given in honor of our son which later became the CSFLI
precious seed money.
The
small class of Sunday school children at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Edgemont were the first ones to get really excited
about this missionary venture. They started collecting
pennies. By the end of 1991, they joyfully offered a total
of 1,961,200 pennies equivalent to $196.12! Along with
the memorial seed money, the Colombian Scholarship Fund
was born!
From
the very beginning, we have worked with San Pablo Lutheran
Church in southern Bogotá. San Pablo is a very poor
congregation. Today CSFLI serves not only San Pablo but
also on a national level.
